Course Overview

Gender-based violence is a phenomenon deeply rooted in gender inequality, and continues to be one of the most notable human rights violations within all societies. Gender-based violence is violence directed against a person because of their gender. Both women and men experience gender-based violence but the majority of victims are women and girls. Gender-based violence (GBV) is the most pervasive yet least visible human rights violation in the world. It includes physical, sexual, mental or economic harm inflicted on a person because of socially ascribed power imbalances between males and females. It also includes the threat of violence, coercion and deprivation of liberty, whether in public or private.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental concepts of gender, gender roles, and the social construction of gender.

  • Identify and analyze the various forms and causes of gender-based violence.

  • Examine the impact of GBV on individuals and communities, including health, psychological, and socio-economic effects.

  • Apply human rights frameworks to address and advocate against GBV.

  • Develop and implement strategies for GBV prevention, response, and survivor support.

  • Integrate gender mainstreaming approaches into programs and policies to promote gender equality.

  • Engage in effective advocacy and communication to raise awareness and influence policy on GBV issues.

Module 5: Action against Gender-based Violence

  • Ways of Combating Gender-based Violence
  • Addressing GBV practices
  • Advocacy, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Existing national and institutional action to combat gender-based violence
  • The role of UN and inter-government institutions in combating GBV

There are four assignments (continuous assessment tests), a research paper and one examination to be offered at the end of the course. Assignments account for 40%, research paper accounts for 30% while Examination accounts for 30% of the mark. Upon completion of the course, you shall be issued a Diploma Certificate and a course transcript.

Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will receive a Diploma Certificate of Merit and a transcript.
